5 Traditional Tools That Will Change the Way You Work

Wednesday, 2 November 2016  |  Scott

Following our article earlier this week outlining 5 tools that will change the way you work,  we’ve decided to put a similar list together specific to traditional window cleaning. If you haven’t read the original article, it’s worth a look.
You can read that HERE.

With traditional tools, quite often the best items are the tried and tested tools that have been around for some time. At WCW we often find the old adage ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’ to ring true. That said though, there are a few additional tools that may be worth trying. You may just find they can save you time, make things a little easier or even provide a better finish.

Is there any tool you think should make our list that we haven’t mentioned? Let us know via Facebook.

1. FaceLift® RazrBLADE RED Rubber

RazrBLADE RED Rubber needs no introduction. Widely regarded as the industry's finest, RazrBLADE RED Rubber is our best selling and highest rated squeegee rubber. For most it’s a no-brainer and the first item in the shopping basket.

Check out some of our customer reviews:

‘On purchasing the red rubbers I thought can they be as good as the reviews , after using then I can honestly say I will be purchasing them again , great product , happy days.’

‘They really do last forever. Even over leaded glass, well worth the money. 10/10’

‘Bought these as not happy with previous blades. Quite honestly the best blade I have used! 30 years in the trade.’

2. Pivoting Handles

The pivoting handled squeegees have gained a lot of traction over the past few years but still seem to be somewhat of a Marmite product, you either love them or hate them. It’s fair to say that in the right hands, the pivoting handle can save time and give a great finish, especially for pole work, though it may take a little time to get the technique.

Within pivoting tools there are a few options but the two products worth knowing about come with great reviews and from well established companies. The two options that have made the list are as follows:

Wagtail products are the first thing that springs to mind when you mention pivoting tools. Whilst they have a number of options the simple slimline squeegee is a favourite of ours.  Combined with an angle arm it makes for a powerful tool to use for pole work.

The EXCELERATOR is a little newer to the market, but equally popular at the minute, the EXCELERATOR handle allows the channel to pivot and also has a swivel function meaning the tool can operate at 3 different angles. One of the major selling points with the EXCELERATOR is that it works in conjunction with the popular MOERMAN® LIQUIDATOR Channel and F*LIQ sleeve.

3. Premium Detailing Cloths

Whilst the scrim vs. microfibre debate rages on, over the years a number of other products have crept into the market armed with minor changes that can make a BIG difference when used daily. Whilst some of these come with a slightly larger price tag, you simply do get what you pay.

Some of our favourites are below:

A. Unger ErgoTec® NINJA MicroWipe™
Unger need no introduction and their ErgoTec® NINJA range of products continue to be well regarded in the traditional world.  The NINJA MicroWipe™ comes with a few little changes from your standard microfibre and they really do make a difference. These include unique scrubbing corners and rows of abrasive looped fibres for removing stubborn stains and a corner pocket to use on a pole.  The high density weave of the fabric and over locked edging make this a long lasting, high quality product.

B. FaceLift®  Fishscale Microfibre
The Fishscale Microfibre cloth is another relatively new product that has been received extremely well, including at the recent window cleaning trade show. The textured weave of the cloth make it super absorbent and great for streak free polishing. One note though, don’t wash them with your whites!

4. Tapered End Channels

Squeegee channels haven’t changed a great deal over the years, one significant change is the rise of tapered end pieces. Unger released the S-Channel PLUS and MOERMAN® have taken it a step further with the LIQUIDATOR 2.0 that has angled channel tips.

The tapered end pieces allow you to cut in closer to the edge of the window effectively reducing the amount of time needed to clean up the surrounds or 'detail'. Much like pivoting tools, there is a learning curve to using these products; therefore not everyone sees the benefit right from the first use. In the right hands though, they are powerful tools! If you’ve ever seen Bob Hatt, inventor of the LIQUIDATOR angled channel in action, you can see he is a true testament to this.

5. Combination Tools

Combination, 2-in-1 or One-Pass tools can be a great time saver, especially if you regularly use an Extension Pole. No need to bring the pole down to swap tools. As all windies know, time is money, so any tools that can improve the speed at which you can work are worth checking out.

Here are a few of the most popular:

This lightweight combination tool has multiple functions. The One-Pass option allows you to squeegee off at the same time you are 'wetting up' the window. This can greatly reduce the time spent cleaning. The beauty of this tool is the unique applicator reduces weight and the LIQUIDATOR 2.0 Channel comes as standard with the COMBINATOR!

B. Unger VisaVersa®
A stalwart tool, the Unger VisaVersa® has been around for years now and for good reason. It's proven to withstand heavy use and fits perfectly with the popular Unger OptiLoc™ Pole System.

As mentioned earlier, pivoting tools are marmite. But for those that have managed to perfect the skill, this might be the one for you. The beauty of this tool is it combines a combination tool with the pivoting feature, so for those skilled in the pivoting way, this can provide some serious cleaning power.

So that's it, five traditional tools you should absolutely check out!

Before we go though, there is one additional wildcard that's definitely worth mentioning:

6. The Unger STINGRAY Indoor Cleaning Kit

Not strictly a traditional tool but not a water fed product either. Perhaps the STINGRAY Indoor Cleaning Kit deserves a category of its own.

The STINGRAY Cleaning Kit really comes into its own for internal cleaning of offices or conservatories With the click of a button you can apply a carefully measured amount of the specially formulated 3M SCOTCHGARD® Glass Cleaning Fluid onto the glass which not only cleans but also leaves an invisible protective layer on the glass that improves future cleaning. The triangular pivoting head is designed to fit into corners and other awkward places. With its easy click and play extension poles, you can work up to heights of 13ft with ease.

Whilst interior cleaning always comes with a host of difficulties, the Unger STINGRAY is the best answer and also looks impressive with great build quality.
